Meet the Directors
Doug, Stan and Erin have over 90 years of Mount Tom experience combined as campers, counselors, group leaders, administrators and parents of Mount Tommers. They’re year-round camp professionals who work passionately to guarantee the greatest possible summer for each camper.
Doug Volan, Owner/Director, has been at Mount Tom for over 35 consecutive summers. His vision for the camp has been shaped by his deep and personal understanding of how a positive camp experience can influence a child’s sense of well-being and self-esteem. Doug, an attorney at law, has served as President of the New York State Camp Directors Association, President of the Rockland/ Westchester Day Camp Association, Organizational Advancement Oversight Chair of the American Camp Association and is a member of the Westchester County Camp Advisory Council. In these various positions, he has established himself as a leader in the camp industry.
Stan Friedmann began as a camper at Mount Tom at the age of five. Today, in his role as director, he oversees staff recruitment, training and evaluation and serves as a mentor to group leaders, specialists and administrators. He’s the father of three former Mount Tommers who were positively impacted by their experiences here. He’s also an award-winning author of children’s baseball books and has developed many successful programs for children, adolescents and adults.
Erin Dutton began her professional career as a teenage counselor at Mount Tom Day Camp and has been here for 20 years. It was her experiences at Mount Tom that led her to pursue a career in education. Her passion for creating age-appropriate programs and her commitment to ensuring our philosophy is carried out has helped maximize the camper experience. She is also the director of Mount Tom Day School and the mother of two current Mount Tommers.
